Android is a Linux-based, open-source operating system. Manufactured for use on cell phones, tablet PCs, e-readers and other mobile devices. Users of Android operating systems enjoy easy access to Google products. Examples are  Google maps, Gmail and Google calendar. The system makes social networking sites like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook easy to use.

The operating system is now getting adopted by many manufacturers. These include Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Sony Ericsson. The ever-expanding applications available on this platform will ensure that Android-powered phones continue to lead competitors in the smartphone market.

The operating system uses a virtual keyboard, as well as touch inputs that correspond to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching and reverse-pinching to manipulate on-screen objects. This is also used in electronic devices.

Flexibility and adaptability of the Android facility especially in supporting screen-based interfaces have resulted in it becoming the OS of choice. Many industrial and consumer electronics including navigation devices, set-top boxes, kiosks, self-checkout stands, medical equipment, netbooks, tablets and the e-readers now use the Operating System.

Computer science departments at various colleges and universities welcomed the development of the Android platform.

Since 2008, Android has seen many updates which have improved the operating system. Adding new features and fixing Bugs in previous releases. Each major releases happen in alphabetical order. Named like a dessert or sugary treat. During the announcement of KitKat in 2013, Google explained that, Since these devices make our lives so sweet, each Android version named after a dessert.  A Google spokesperson told CNN in an interview.

Android is basically a piece of software which allows your hardware to function. The Android OS gives you access to apps, including many of Google’s own creation. These allow you to look for information on the web, play music and videos, check your location on a map, take photos using your device’s camera and plenty more besides.
