Google Lens, the feature which enables the Pixel 2’s camera to identify and recognize objects, landmarks, and more is soon going to be possible on all Android devices by the Photos application. The company had restricted Lens to the Pixel 2 series till. Where the choice was already in the Google Assistant and Google Photos. The company says The lens in Google Photos application will also roll out for iOS people early. But there is no clear timeline for the same.
The lens is also part of the Google Assistant on Pixel 2 phones. However, it is not transparent when the Google Assistant on other Android devices will support the Lens feature. The Lens works when anyone points the camera at a famous landmark, painting, place, etc via Google Assistant. And will display details about it, including the name, opening hours for historical sites, along with directions where wanted.
The Lens can also read barcodes to search for a product, save dates, mobile numbers and many more. It also has the choice of searching for books, video and more as well based on the pictures. This is part of the Google Assistant features. Where the camera is used to scan and identify the object or place. Google Lens also has the capability to make a contact with a business card which is scanned.
In the Google Photos application, a Lens symbol available that arrives under every picture taken by the user, like the one seen on the Assistant. Once a user hits on the similarly, the photo is scanned and Lens gives the relevant result. It might not regularly be very accurate though or specific. For instance, in our Google Pixel 2 XL, when asked to scan a picture of a Galaxy S9, it only gives the result as the phone. However, when it appears to artwork, the Lens feature is especially accurate, though not all will see the necessity for something like this.
The company has also said that the update for Lens in Photos application is being launched in batches. Not all Android people will observe it on their phone so soon, but it should be possible soon. Google Lens relies on machine learning and AI to identify the objects.
